The Ferencváros Gymnastics Club has lived through some golden eras, but this one is undoubtedly one of them, if we only think of the consecutive championships of our football team, the international cup titles, the golds of our water polo players, or the cup wins and championship titles of our women's handball players. But there was one more thing that our 124-year-old club, with its 124 Olympic, world and European champions, its 124 class athletes, its 124 legends, its 124 icons, had longed for, and that was the final four of the Women's Handball Champions League. And the "miracle of Metz", the amazing turnaround, became a "reality" on Saturday when our girls entered the gates of the MVM Dome.
"We just have to enjoy it, there's no pressure on us", many thought, but the big question was whether it was possible to play handball in such a relaxed way in front of 18,000 spectators against one of the best teams in the world. In fact, our team had come here with a purpose: we had nothing to lose, but two wins could fly us to the sky (which was perfectly in line with the pre-match message from our fans, "We can't stop here"). The first semi-final showed that the two-time defending champions Vipers will play in the final again this time, while Győr will fight for bronze, and from 18:00 onwards we will face Esbjerg. The seats were just filling up during the warm-up when one of the on-site workers remarked, "Now the real match atmosphere is coming", and we couldn't wait for the arena to rumble, to calm our visibly excited players.
The only thing more reassuring than that was our first goal, which at the end of the 4th minute, after a great break-in by Katrin Klujber, first brought a large part of the arena to its feet, and then Angela Malestein took the lead from the next attack. The teams went neck and neck in the first ten minutes, and although we went two goals down, we were always quick to respond, so that Esbjerg could not build a significant lead.
Then in the 19th minute we went into a double-women disadvantage and it looked like the first really critical phase of the game was coming, but Szöllősi-Zácsik Szandra and Andrea Lekics scored to make it a double penalty and we were minus one at the break (10-11). Unfortunately, the downturn came - three minutes before the end of the period, the visitors from the North had three and then four goals, and we could go to the break with a 13-17 disadvantage, which was a pity, because we probably didn't have that much difference in this half.
Instead of regret, of course, our players came into the restart with clenched teeth, and after just over three minutes of play, Malestein's empty-goal brought the score to two, and there was another explosion of noise from the fans, suggesting that the thousands of people in the arena still believed in the team and in a miraculous result. And what had been in the air for minutes became a reality in the 43rd minute: another goal from our Dutch right winger caught up with the opponents, and our supporters added an extra something that is rarely (if ever) seen in a handball match. You could say that half the handball fans in Europe learned today what the Fradi camp is (21-21).
The next task was to take the lead, but our rivals didn't give us much of a chance, scoring immediately after our equalizer without coveting and regaining the lead. The big moment came in the 54th minute, when Kinga Janurik made a great save, and after Klujber's shot the scoreboard showed 27-26.
After Klujber's 7-meter shot, we led by two with two and a half minutes to go, and Esbjerg switched to seven on six, and we were in for an amazing endgame. With a minute to go Reistad equalised and we had to win a game with sixty seconds to play. After a timeout by Gábor Elek, we attacked the rest of the time and as it is written in the big book, Emily Bölk scored the winning goal with a few seconds left (30-29).
In front of a world record crowd in women's handball, we made another sporting history, the amazing Champions League march is not over yet, we will play for the Champions League gold against Vipers on Sunday at 18:00.
