After 21 years, we met MTK in the MOL Hungarian Cup, this time in the semi-final. Robbie Keane sent on the starting line-up of Dibusz - Makreckis, Gartenmann, Cissé, Szalai, Ramírez - Tóth, Keita, Júlio Romao - Pesics, Saldanha. The match was preceded by a mourning break in memory of the iconic figure of Hungarian football, József Garami, who passed away on 22 April 2025 at the age of 85. The coaching legend won one league title and two Hungarian Cups with Ferencváros.
First half
The visitors had the first chance through Molnár, but Dibusz saved easily in the third minute and Horváth's attempt was missed. However, in the 16th minute we were out of luck, MTK outplayed our defence and Rajmund Molnár volleyed the ball into our goal from about 11 metres out (0-1). We could have equalised quickly, Ramírez got the ball inside the visitors' penalty area, his rebound found Pesics, whose shot was saved by Csenterics.
We then took the lead, in the 37th minute Júlio Romao's header was cleared from under the bar and Tóth's shot was blocked. In the dying stages of the first half, Cristian Ramírez fired after a corner kick and the ball found its way into the net (1-1).
Second half
Two substitutions were made at the break, Saldanha was replaced by Barnabas Varga and Keita by Habib Maiga. It didn't take much to turn the game around, Varga ran into an empty space and then skilfully curved his shot into the long side, where Pesics was able to nod home unchallenged (2-1). A few minutes later Varga was again the provider, but this time his centre was cleared by the defenders. In the 66th minute, Kata's long-range shot went over the top and MTK struggled to create any chances at this stage of the game. After that Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane and Lenny Joseph came on for Tóth and Pesics. It didn't take Joseph long to score our third goal (3-1). After the goal, Ramírez, who scored our first goal, was replaced by Eldar Civic.
