Our thirty-five time Hungarian men's football champion team hosted Újpest in the final round of the OTP Bank League. In the match, Leandro de Almedia was the acting head coach of the team, who voted for the starting line-up of Dibusz - Makreckis, Wingo, Botka, Ramírez - Zachariassen, Tóth A., Ben Romdhane - Szevikjan, Varga B., Marquinhos. Before the kick-off, the Dr. Fenyvesi Máté Award was presented, which was won this year by Zoltán Skotner, and then our club president Gábor Kubatov bid farewell to our four players who will leave at the end of the season, Muhamed Besic, Krisztián Lisztes, Samy Mmaee and Henry Wingo.
First half
We didn't have to wait long for the first situation, in the fourth minute Zachariassen left his defenders behind on the right wing and crossed into the middle, but the oncoming Barnabás Varga couldn't get a good touch on the ball and it ended up in Molnár's hands. The next minutes were uneventful, our team had several chances to take corners, but they were mostly without danger. In the 31st minute, a promising attack almost came to nothing, but the ball fell to Sevikian, who found Barnabas Varga and our striker's header hit the top bar.
Four minutes later, Ramírez was fouled by the opposing defenders and the referee awarded a free kick, Ben Romdhane curled it over the goal. In the 37th minute, Alex Tóth's cross was again headed in by Barnabás Varga, this time just wide of the left post. A minute later, the ice was finally broken, as Marquinhos, running down the left flank, curled a spectacular shot into the Újpest net (1-0). In the extra time of the first half, Barnabás Varga again headed into the visitors' goal, but this time Molnár saved confidently.
Second half
After the break, our team continued to dominate, with the opponents hardly having the ball. During our attacks, the visitors mostly saved to corners or could only get the ball through fouls. First, Sevikjan's cross fell into the lap of Újpest's keeper, then Alex Tóth and Ramírez's attempt missed the goal.
In the 62nd minute, Zachariassen received a good ball and shot from the corner of the penalty area. In the same minute Marquinhos was replaced by Lisztes. Ten minutes later, our young striker started and the opponent's defenders cleared the ball, but it went to Barnabas Varga, who shot from 13-14 meters, but Molnár saved with great moves. However, the referee awarded a penalty for handling by Huszti. Lisztes got behind the ball and scored the penalty: he finished his Ferencváros career with a goal (2-0). After the goal, Leandro sent in more substitutes, with Traoré replacing Sevikjan and Kodro replacing Barnabás Varga. Our Bosnian striker scored almost immediately, but his goal was disallowed by VAR for a foul.
Alex Tóth and Zachariassen both left the pitch in the 82nd minute, the former being replaced by Besic, who will also leave Ferencváros, while Abu Fani came on for the latter. We almost got our third goal in the 88th minute, with Ben Romdhane and Kodro trying in quick succession, but neither could find the net. Two minutes later, Traoré pulled up on the right wing and passed to Ben Romdhane, but our Tunisian international couldn't get a touch on the ball. From the corner, Ramírez's long-range shot was cleared by the visitors' defenders. In extra time, Traoré fought out a free kick 25 yards from goal, but at the end of the combination Lisztes' cross was gathered by Molnár.
There was no more goal in the extra time, so our team finished the 2023/24 OTP Bank League season with a 2-0 win over Újpest.
