SURINAME NATIONAL TEAM DEFENDER SIGNED FROM SLOVAN
Three-time Slovakian champion and cup winner Myenty Abena will continue his career at Ferencváros.

Defending Hungarian champions and UEL group winners, Ferencváros today announced their first new winter signing:
eight-time Suriname international defender Myenty Abena will continue his career at Ferencváros!

The 28-year-old player joins us from Slovan Bratislava.

INTRODUCTION

Myenty Abena, full name Leo Myenty Janna Abena, was born on 12 December 1994 in Paramaribo, the capital of the former Dutch overseas province of Suriname in the northeast of Suriname. The 28-year-old centre-back, 191 cm tall, who can play on the right side of defence when needed, also has Dutch nationality and started his career in the Netherlands at Utrecht, with whom he became Dutch U21 champion in 2016. He played his first professional match in August 2016 for FC Utrecht's second team in the Dutch second division against PSV Eindhoven's youth team.

In the summer of 2017, he joined De Graafschap, then also in the second division, where he was promoted to the Dutch top flight at the end of the season. In the Eredivisie, Abena made 12 appearances in the autumn of 2018, attracting the attention of several clubs, and in January 2019 he signed for then Slovakian champions Spartak Trnava, with whom he won the Slovak Cup in May that year, scoring his side's last penalty in the penalty shootout win over Zsolna in the final.

In June 2019, he signed a four-year contract with one of his former team's biggest rivals, newly crowned champions Slovan Bratislava, with whom he doubled his tally in 2020 and 2021, winning both the league and cup titles. In 2022 they failed to win the Slovak Cup, but they did win the league title again, making Abena three-time Slovak champions and cup winners in total.

In the autumn of 2022, he was a key man for Slovan in the Slovak league, in the cup and on the international stage. He played in both legs of the Champions League qualifying tie against Ferencváros, and appeared in five group matches for the Bratislava side, who eventually reached the main stage of the UEFA Europa League.

He made his Suriname national debut on 24 March 2021 in a 3-0 CONCACAF World Cup qualifier against Cayman Islands, playing 88 minutes. Since then, he has made a total of eight appearances for Suriname, most recently in June 2022 in a 3-0 loss to Mexico in CONCACAF Nations League Group A.
