It is official that 33-time champions, 24-time Hungarian Cup winners and UEL group winners Ferencvaros signs Owusu Kwabena, a Ghanaian U23 striker, whose name will ring a familiar bell with fans. He scored in our away match against Azerbaijani champions Qarabag in the third round of Champions League qualifying in August 2022, which ended with a 1-1 draw.
INTRODUCTION
The 25-year-old striker, 182 centimetres tall, was born on 18 June 1997 in Accra, Ghana. He began his professional career in his hometown in 2016, before moving on loan to Spanish club Toledo and later signing for then Spanish top flight side Leganés. But he failed to find his feet here, with his team constantly loaning him out to smaller clubs such as Real Oviedo, Cartagena, Salamanca and Córdoba. At Real Oviedo, he made eight appearances in the second division and five in the Cup for Toledo and Córdoba, scoring twice for the former against Conquense in the 2016-2017 edition of the cup.
Owusu was at home in the Iberian Peninsula until 2020, when Leganés loaned him to nine-time champions Qarabag, the Azeri giants, where he had one assist in five games in his first half-season. His next full season in Azerbaijan saw him start scoring goals: he netted nine times in 39 matches and made two assists (he also scored once against eventual winners Villarreal in the UEFA Europa League 2020/2021 season). For the following season, Qarabag loaned the Ghanaian striker to Ankaragüçu, and he excelled in Turkey, scoring 10 goals and four assists in 23 games, which is why Qarabag recalled him in the summer of 2022.
Owusu Kwabena scored twice in 2022 in the BL qualifiers (one against Fradi and the other against Zurich), and he also netted in the Europa League group stage against French first division Nantes, Greek stars Olympiacos and German giants Freiburg, helping his side to 3rd place in the group that led to a Europa League play-off in the spring. Of course, the 25-year-old has also produced well in the Azeri league, with five goals and three assists in 18 games.
From now on, however, he will be scoring the goals for Ferencváros Torna Club.
