KEHINDE DECIDED, 17-MATCH WINNING STREAK
Barnabás Varga returned in a winning derby after our men's football team beat Újpest 1-0.

Whether our great winning streak in the history of derbies will continue was the biggest question of the first game of the season against Újpest in the 4th round of the OTP Bank Liga. Our 35-time champion men's football team was looking forward to the clash with two wins and no goals received and a record-breaking 16 derby wins in a row. The Purples, who underwent a major transformation in the summer, scored their first win of the season against Fehérvár in the last round.

Before the match, our fans had already a reason to rejoice, as our top scorer Barnabás Varga, who was injured in the European Championship, returned to the team, albeit still in a mask.

Head coach Pascal Jansen threw the following starters into action against the purple team: Dibusz – Makreckis, Cissé, Raul Gustavo, Ramírez – Rommens, Abu Fani – Gruber, Zachariassen, Ben Romdhane – Varga B..

First half

We took the initiative at the start of the game, in the 3rd minute after a left wing cross, Zsombor Gruber, who was coming in well, headed in a close and powerful shot, Piscitelli could save it, but Ben Romdhane came on and despite the empty goal, he bombed into the crossbar. The atmosphere was not to be complained about this time either. Although there was not a full house, our supporters created a fantastic atmosphere in the Groupama Arena throughout. In the 9th minute, our Belgian midfielder took a shot, but his shot into the bottom right was headed wide by Piscitelli, and soon after Abu Fani fired over from 17 meters. In the middle of the half, just before the break, Cebrail Makreckis soloed into the Újpest penalty area, but it was too much of a feint and his shot was easily saved by the Italian goalkeeper.

After half an hour, the agile Grubert received a ball on the right, he crossed to Barnabas Varga, but the ball went over our striker. The first yellow of the match went to Újpest, for a tackle on Gruber by Gergényi. The goals were not in danger for the rest of the time until half time, we were still in control and the purple team finished the first 45 minutes without a shot.

Second half

There were no substitutions on either side at the break. The second half started with a chance from Ben Romdhane, but his long range shot was saved by Piscitelli. The smoke on the pitch brought the game to a standstill for a while and then the teams made substitutions, with Ben Romdhane, Gruber and Rommens coming off and Kehinde, Traoré and Maiga coming on. For Újpest, Keita replaced Mucsányi. In the 65th minute, a great situation was missed, a throw-in by Makreckis was missed by Varga with his head, but it was good for Maiga, who in turn nodded into the hands of Piscitelli. Soon after, Traoré raced down the right and launched Zachariassen, but his cross failed to reach Kehinde inside the five-meter box. The Újpest defender drifted the ball into the goalkeeper's hands with his hand, but after VAR, referee Bogár ruled it was not a penalty. In the 74th minute, Ramírez's cross bounced in, but Piscitelli was able to push it over the bar.

Isaac Pappoe, who was brought on in the summer, was substituted for the last ten minutes, and Kady came on for Zachariassen and Abu Fani. The referee added 10 minutes to the end of the game. And it was a good time, as Tosin Kehinde took the initiative and with a nice solo finish, he curled the ball into the top right corner (1-0).

Kehinde had another great chance later on, but the score remained the same. There was a bit of a scramble at the end, at the end of which Abu Fani was unfortunately sent off. It was an exciting game, our team is in the league with three wins from three games without a goal received.
