On Wednesday, 31 August, our defending Hungarian champions and cup-winning men's football team announced another summer signing, 33-time Bosnian national team midfielder Amer Gojak. The 25-year-old attacking midfielder joins the club from Dinamo Zagreb, where he was a key player.
Introduction
Amer Gojak was born on 13 February 1997 in Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital on the banks of the Miljacka River in the Dinari Mountains. He was introduced to the basics of football at FK Novi Grad Sarajevo, from where he signed for FK Zeljeznicar Sarajevo after two years.
He spent five years playing for the Sarajevo club's youth teams before signing for one-time Bosnian Cup winners FK Olimpik in January 2014. He spent a year at the club, also based in the capital, before moving to Croatia's top club Dinamo Zagreb in the winter of 2015.
He initially got his chance to play for reserves of the 23-time Croatian runners-up, but made his debut in the Youth Champions League, scoring four times in six matches. His excellent performances quickly caught the attention of the adults and he made his debut in five matches in the top flight. He repaid the confidence of the management with a goal and an assist.
With such performances, there was no question of him spending the next season with the first team. He played 22 matches in the top flight, scoring four goals and assisting five, but this season he made his debut in the most prestigious European competition, the Champions League, where he was in the same group as Lyon, Juventus and Sevilla.
In the following years, he became a regular starter for Zagreb, playing in 22, 25 and then 27 league games, as well as in the group stages of the Europa League and Champions League. In the 2020/21 season, he was on loan at Italian champions Torino, where he scored a goal and gave one assist in 15 games (both against Parma).
After the Italian loan, he returned to Croatia and with him to the international stage in the Europa League. In the current season he has played in four UEFA Champions League qualifiers and two league games, scoring against Hajduk Split.
He has also toured the national team through the age-group ranks, finally making his senior debut on 15 November 2018 in a 0-0 Nations League draw against Austria. He didn't have to wait long for his first goal either, scoring twice in a 5-0 win over Liechtenstein in a European Championship qualifier on 5 September 2019, and also dishing out an assist. So far, he has made 33 appearances for the national team, with four goals and three assists to his name.
