Our 34-time Hungarian men's football champions have strengthened further with the signing of 15-time Israeli international, three-time Israeli champion and one-time Israeli Cup winner Mohammed Abu Fani from Maccabi Haifa.
Biography
Mohammed Abu Fani was born on 27 April 1998 in Kafr Qara, 22 km from Haifa. He was introduced to football in Haifa, the third largest city in the country, where he played for Maccabi Haifa. In the northern Israeli city, he toured the club's academy, and in the 2016/17 season he played in the Youth Champions League, scoring against Soligorsk, as well as making appearances against Dinamo Moscow and Borussia Dortmund youth teams.
In July 2017, he joined the senior team of Haifa, who loaned him to Hapoel Ramat Gan in September. He played 29 matches for the team, currently in the second division, scoring 2 goals in total. He returned to his boyhood club at the end of the season, but another loan followed, playing two seasons at Hapoel Hadera, where he scored 5 goals and 4 assists in 49 games.
In July 2020 he returned to Maccabi Haifa, where he cemented his place as a regular. In the 2021/22 season, he played in the UEFA Conference League (against Feyenoord, Slavia Praha and Union Berlin). The following season, he played in the Champions League group stage. He has been on show against the likes of PSG, with Messi, Mbappé and Neymar, Juventus, with Vlahovic and Di María, and Benfica, with Goncalo Ramos, on the attack.
His talent has attracted attention from a young age and he made his debut for the Israeli U18 national team in 2015. He has moved up the ranks almost year on year, playing for the U19 (19 games, 5 goals), U21 (8 games) and making his senior debut in an European Championship play-off against Scotland on 8 October 2020. He also shared his first, second and third goals in a friendly against Montenegro (Israel won 3-1). So far, he has made 15 appearances for the senior national team.
